David was a lovely gentleman who was prompt and efficient in unclogging the drains. I was informed when he was on his way and sent a link to track his location so I knew exactly when he would arrive. He was polite and considerate and explained the issue to me once he had fixed it. Definitely will be using this service again! Very reliable!

I used Sharpline for an old toilet with bad pipes and called as a matter of urgency. Chad from Sharpline was very punctual, great communication, so friendly and incredibly professional. He gave us advice and a heads up to what would need to happen to fix the issue long term (which at the time we weren't in a position to do). I highly recommend using Chad as a plumber.

When To Call A Plumber For A Clogged Drain – A Quick Overview

Knowing when to call a plumber for a clogged drain can prevent major plumbing issues. DIY Methods to Unclog Drains

Unclogging drains on your own can be effective for minor blockages. Here are some methods to try before calling in a professional.

Plunger

A plunger is a handy tool that can dislodge blockages through suction and pressure. It is effective for sinks, tubs and toilets. It provides a quick and straightforward solution for clogs caused by hair, food particles and other debris.

When using a plunger, ensure there’s enough water in the sink or tub to cover the plunger’s cup. Place the plunger over the drain and push down firmly, creating a seal. Then, pump the plunger up and down rapidly several times before lifting it off the drain. The pressure created by the plunger can break up the clog and restore normal flow.

Drain Snake

A drain snake, or auger, can reach deeper clogs that a plunger cannot access, and it comes in various sizes, making it suitable for different types of drains. Drain snakes are an essential tool for homeowners dealing with recurring clogs and can save you from more serious plumbing issues if used correctly.

To use a drain snake, insert it into the drain and push it down until you feel resistance. Turn the handle to break up the clog, then pull the snake out. This tool is especially useful for stubborn clogs that are located further down the pipe.

Hot Water Flush

Pouring boiling water down the drain can dissolve grease and soap scum buildup. This is particularly useful for kitchen sinks where grease and oil are common culprits. Regularly flushing your drains with hot water can prevent buildup and keep your pipes clear.

Wet/Dry Vacuum

A wet/dry vacuum can be used to suck out clogs that are close to the drain opening. It is a quick and non-invasive way to clear clogs without the use of chemicals or extensive tools.

So how does it work? Set the vacuum to liquid mode and create a tight seal over the drain. Turn on the vacuum to draw out the clog. This method is effective for clogs that are within reach of the vacuum’s hose.

Signs You Need a Plumber for a Clogged Drain

Sometimes, a clogged drain signals a bigger problem that requires professional attention. Here are the signs to look out for.

Persistent Clogs

If your drain continues to clog after using DIY methods, it’s time to call a plumber. Persistent clogs indicate a deeper issue within your plumbing system that DIY methods cannot resolve. A skilled plumber has the necessary tools and expertise to accurately diagnose and resolve the issue.

Ignoring persistent clogs can lead to more significant issues, including damage to your pipes and water damage to your home. Seeking professional help ensures the problem is addressed correctly and prevents further complications.

Multiple Clogged Drains

When more than one drain is clogged in your home, it could indicate a main sewer line issue. This situation requires immediate attention from a plumber, as it can cause sewage backup and extensive damage to your property.

Addressing a main sewer line issue promptly can save you from costly repairs and health hazards associated with sewage backup. Consider hiring a professional plumber to identify the cause of the blockage and provide a solution to prevent future occurrences.

Slow Draining Water

If water drains slowly despite your efforts to unclog it, there may be a deeper blockage. Slow-draining water is a sign that the clog is not completely cleared or is located further down the pipe. In this case, a plumber can use specialised equipment to locate and remove the blockage.

Persistent slow drainage can lead to standing water, which creates an ideal environment for bacteria and mould growth. Dealing with the issue promptly with professional help ensures your home remains safe and hygienic.

Foul Odours

Persistent bad smells coming from your drains could be a sign of a significant clog or sewer issue. Foul odours indicate that waste is not being properly transported away from your home. So if you notice a foul odour from your drains, don’t ignore it. In addition to being a sign of a blocked drain issue, it can also lead to a buildup of harmful gases in your home, posing health risks to you and your family.

Professional intervention ensures that your plumbing system functions correctly and safely. A plumber can identify the source of the smell and eliminate the clog or repair the sewer line if necessary.

Water Backing Up

Water backing up into sinks, tubs or toilets is a clear sign of a severe blockage that needs professional intervention. Backups occur when the water has nowhere to go due to a blockage in the pipes. This issue requires immediate attention to prevent water damage and potential contamination.

To identify the cause of the backup and provide a solution to restore proper drainage, contact a professional plumber. They can help protect your home from extensive damage and ensure your plumbing system remains functional.

Final Thoughts

Knowing when to call a plumber for a clogged drain can save you from costly repairs and ensure your plumbing system functions efficiently. While DIY methods are effective for minor clogs, persistent issues and signs of severe blockages require professional attention. As a property owner, recognising the signs of serious drainage problems early can help you avoid extensive damage and maintain a smooth-running plumbing system. Don’t hesitate to seek expert help when needed to protect your home and your peace of mind.
